Top 10 Types Of Dangerous Dogs

A dog can be a loveable and loyal addition to any family but certain breeds are socialized to be more aggressive, or may naturally have a tendency toward inflicting injury. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year and that more than 800,000 annually seek medical attention for a dog bite, the majority of whom are children.

Top 10 Types Of Dangerous Dogs

Though most domestic dogs are friendly, there is a large portion of those who have owners that are not, and there are a few key factors that determine how aggressive or how passive a dog will be. Negligence on the part of the dog owner can create a situation where the dog attacks passersby or friends, and the injuries that can result from a dog bite or attack can be very dangerous.

If you or a loved one was injured by a dog with a negligent owner, you may be entitled to compensation because of the pain and suffering you experienced during and after the attack. The legal team of Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers believes that compassionate and competent litigation is the best recourse in the event you are attacked by a dog.

We will always fight for the MAXIMUM amount of compensation that is due to our clients, and the compensation that a successful verdict or settlement can bring will give the victim and their family the opportunity to recover with the proper medical care and any rehabilitative treatment they may need.

The Journal of American Veterinary Medicine compiled data from a 20-year study that examined the number of fatalities that arose from each breed of dog. The information resulted in a list of the top 10 most dangerous dog breeds by the number of deaths they caused. They are:

1. Pit bull

Pit bulls caused 66 fatalities over the course of the study, ranking it as the most deadly dog breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier has consistently been the breed of choice in the highly-illegal sport of dogfighting, and it is known for its intimidating and aggressive nature.

2. Rottweiler

With 39 fatalities over the course of the study, Rottweiler is another well-known aggressive dog breed. With a very high prey drive and a herding mentality, the Rottweiler’s heavy frame makes them an imposing figure for an opponent.

3. German Shepherd

A fully grown German Shepherd dog can weigh 82 pounds and stands approximately 25 inches high. With 17 fatalities over the duration of the study, this commonly recognized breed has a very high prey drive and are very intelligent, which makes their aggressive nature even more threatening.

4. Husky

The Husky is an extremely old breed with a history of being sled dogs, which influences their need for constant activity. About 15 deaths were attributed to the Husky, whose aggressive nature and high prey drive can be linked to their cousin, the wolf.

5. Wolf-Dog Hybrid

About 14 fatalities were attributed to the wolf-dog hybrid over the course of the study. This animal’s genetics are very close to a pure wolf and it is aggressive, defensive and maintains a high prey drive much like the other breeds on the list.

6. Malamute

Malamutes have an appearance very similar to the husky but the Malamute is sturdier and has a heavier frame, weighing in around 85 pounds. They are responsible for 12 fatalities in the study and are considered dangerous more for their size.

7. Doberman

As one of the most aggressive breeds ever recognized, the Doberman is used very frequently as a guard dog. Intelligent, exceedingly loyal and aggressive toward perceived threats, Doberman Pinschers killed 9 individuals according to the study, most of them in defense of their masters.

8. Chow-Chow

Standing approximately 20 inches tall and weighing around 60 pounds, the Chow-Chow is consistently named as one of the most dangerous and aggressive breeds, especially toward strangers. In the journal’s study, the Chow-Chow killed 8 people. They are known for lashing out when they have not gotten enough exercise or out of boredom.

9. Great Dane

With a total of 7 fatalities during the study, the Great Dane is one of the largest dogs ever to be bred. They can stand up to 30 inches and their enormous size makes them a threat to children and small animals.

10. St. Bernard

St. Bernards typically have a passive attitude but they were responsible for 7 fatalities during the years of the study, most likely attributed to their size and stature.

When coming in contact with a strange dog it is important not to make direct eye contact or appear afraid. It is also important not to run away from it quickly, as most of these breeds have high pretty drives and the swift movement will catch their attention.

If you are bitten by a dangerous dog, seek medical attention immediately. Get information from the owner about recent vaccinations and other attacks, if possible. Following treatment, contact an experienced dangerous dog lawyer to discuss the details of your case and explore your rights.
