Meriden, CT (November 6, 2021) – A serious auto accident left one person dead and several more with injuries in the Meriden area on Saturday afternoon, November 6.
The incident occurred just after 3:00 p.m. on southbound I-91 at exit 18. State Police say the initial reports indicate that a 2009 Chevy Suburban was traveling in the right lane when traffic began to slow.
Shortly thereafter, the Suburban’s driver rear-ended the car in front of them, a 2011 Ford Fusion Se.
Upon hitting the Fusion, the Suburban’s driver lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll over into the right lane and shoulder. The force of the collision set off a chain reaction of cars rear ending each other, ending with a total of six cars involved in the accident.
State Police said that the driver of the Fusion, a 30-year-old man from Middletown, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Suburban, as well as the drivers of the second and third vehicles involved, were transported by ambulance to area medical centers with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Four passengers in a 2019 Honda Odyssey that had been hit, including three children, were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, also for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
All lanes were closed between exits 18 and 17 as police investigated but reopened later in the evening.
Officers asked witnesses to contact Trooper Gina Bavolacco of the State Police barracks in Bethany.
The investigation remains active at this time.
