Police officer killed in motorcycle crash

On June 16, a Massachusetts police officer lost her life in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Connecticut. The accident occurred on Interstate 91 in East Windsor.

According to information released by the Connecticut State Police, an officer with the Chicopee Police Department was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson XL883 southbound near Exit 44 when she lost control of the bike and slammed into the median barrier. As a result of the impact, she was thrown from the motorcycle and killed. She was not on duty at the time of the crash.

The officer, a 33-year-old resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, joined the police department in 2014 and worked as the resource officer for Chicopee High School. Before becoming a police officer, she served for eight years in the U.S. Army. In a statement to the press, Chicopee Police Chief William Jebb said the news of the officer’s death left him with a “heavy heart.” Investigators do not yet know what caused the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorcycle accidents can be caused by a number of factors, including weather conditions, improperly designed roads and the negligent actions of other drivers. Motorcyclists who are injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by negligent drivers might benefit from contacting an attorney as soon as possible. After reviewing the case, the attorney might recommend filing a personal injury lawsuit against the driver responsible for the crash. If this suit is successful, the victim might be awarded compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, pain and suffering, lost wages and more. If the victim was killed in the accident, his or her family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver.
