Waterbury, CT (September 28, 2021) – An SUV that was speeding off the highway struck a woman’s SUV in Waterbury on Monday night, September 27, and police say the woman has since died.
The accident happened just after 8:30 p.m. on northbound Route 8 at exit 35 to East Aurora Street.
Initial reports state that a Ford Explorer was speeding off the ramp and approaching the intersection when the driver disregarded the red traffic light. The driver ended up hitting a Mazda pick-up truck, causing the pick-up to flip over several times.
The force of the collision caused the truck to run into a red Lexus sedan, which was then pushed into a nearby ambulance.
Officers said the male driver of the Ford Explorer, along with a female passenger traveling in the vehicle, fled the scene before they arrived.
The driver of the pick-up truck, identified only as a 58-year-old woman from Waterbury, was transported to the hospital via ambulance. She was pronounced deceased a short time later.
A passenger in the pick-up truck sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the Lexus was not injured.
Police said the occupants inside the ambulance also suffered injuries. Those victims, along with the truck’s passenger, were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation but anyone with information is asked to contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit or Crime Stoppers.
