Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends each year. This is especially true in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New England. With millions of drivers heading to visit family and friends, the roads can become congested and dangerous.
At Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers, we value keeping you and your loved ones safe this holiday season. Before you hit the road, review these Thanksgiving travel safety tips to help ensure a safe and stress-free journey.
1. Plan Ahead and Leave Early
Traffic congestion peaks the day before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. Plan your route in advance and leave early to avoid peak travel times.
Check for road closures, construction, and weather updates. You can find this information on local DOT websites or use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps. Giving yourself extra time helps prevent rushed or distracted driving, two leading causes of holiday accidents.

2. Prepare Your Vehicle for Long Drives
Before setting out, perform a quick vehicle safety check:
- Inspect your tires for tread depth and proper inflation.
- Check your oil, windshield wiper fluid, and coolant levels.
- Make sure your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working.
- Pack an emergency kit with a flashlight, blankets, jumper cables, and first-aid supplies.
Cold New England weather can change fast. Be prepared for icy conditions, especially if you travel on I-84 in Connecticut or I-90 in Massachusetts.
3. Avoid Distracted and Impaired Driving
Thanksgiving celebrations often include alcohol, but impaired driving remains one of the top causes of fatal holiday accidents. Always designate a sober driver or use rideshare options if you plan to drink. Additionally, avoid distractions such as texting, eating, or using your GPS while driving. Even a moment’s inattention can lead to a serious crash on crowded highways.
4. Watch for Weather Changes
New England weather is unpredictable in late November. Rain, fog, or early snowfall can make roads slick and visibility poor. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and use low beams in foggy conditions. If conditions worsen, pull over safely and wait until it’s safe to continue driving.
5. Drive Defensively and Be Patient
Holiday stress can lead to aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating or speeding. Stay calm, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and anticipate sudden stops or lane changes. Remember that defensive driving is key to preventing accidents during high-traffic weekends.
6. Rest Before You Drive
Long hours behind the wheel can cause driver fatigue, especially after large family meals. Get a full night’s rest before your trip, and take regular breaks to stretch and refresh. Fatigue slows reaction times and increases the risk of drifting or missing hazards.
7. Know What to Do After an Accident
Despite your best efforts, accidents can still happen. If you are involved in a car accident whether in Connecticut or Massachusetts, seek medical help right away.
Also, contact a personal injury lawyer who knows about car accident claims in New England. The team at Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers can help you understand the legal process. They will work to get you the compensation you deserve.
