Every time you get behind the wheel of a car, you put yourself at risk of involvement in an injurious or fatal car accident. According to the National Safety Council, in 2019, an estimated 38,800 people in the U.S. died in car crashes.
Your risk of involvement in an accident depends on how you drive, how others around you drive and in certain cases, the roads you drive on. In New Haven, Connecticut, the UConn Connecticut Crash Data Repository ranked some of the most dangerous roads in terms of accidents in the city during 2018.
1. CT-63
In 2018, 147 car accidents occurred on CT-63 in New Haven, Connecticut. This was down 17.9% from 2017 when 179 accidents occurred on this state highway during that year.
2. Whalley Avenue
In 2018, 258 car accidents happened on Whalley Avenue, a 13.7% decrease from the year before. In 2017, 183 accidents happened on this same road.
3. U.S. Route 1
This major highway covers much of the eastern part of the U.S. and runs through New Haven, Connecticut. In 2018, 189 accidents occurred on the New Haven portion of this highway compared with 194 in 2017.
4. Chapel Street
In 2018, 198 accidents occurred on Chapel Street. The year before, 252 accidents occurred on this same street, creating a 21.4% decrease in accidents from 2017 to 2018.
5. CT-15
A state highway that runs through a large part of the state, the New Haven, Connecticut portion of CT-15 saw 263 car accidents in 2018. This is a 27.5% decrease from 2017 when 363 accidents happened on the same portion of this highway.
Even though roads in New Haven, Connecticut were mostly safer in 2018 than 2017, you should still exercise caution when driving. Become a better, safer driver by always wearing your seatbelt, keeping your eyes on the road and traveling at the posted speed limit.
