A spinal cord injury is defined as damage to any part of the spinal cord or the nerves at the base of the spinal canal. Spinal cord injuries and paralysis are injuries that are commonly sustained in car, motorcycle and truck accidents, with injury victims often facing permanent changes to the strength and sensations below the injury location.

Spinal Cord Injury

In fact, a report recently issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it was noted that motor vehicle accidents account for over 40% of all spine injuries incurred in the United States each year.

There Are Several Types Of Spinal Cord Injuries

The severity of a spinal cord injury and where the injury takes place can have profound effects on an individual’s ability to control their limbs. Health care professionals categorize the severity of a spinal cord injury into two parts: complete or incomplete.

Commons symptoms from a spinal cord injury include:

  • Complete injury – An individual has no feeling or movement below the injury.
  • Incomplete injury – The person has some feeling or movement below the spinal cord injury site.

In light of these two categories, it’s important to note that many spinal cord injuries can result in total or partial paralysis.

With that in mind, paralysis can be broken down into two groups:

  • Paraplegia – The spinal cord injury affects parts or all of the torso, legs and pelvic organs.
  • Quadriplegia – The spinal cord injury affects the hands, arms, legs, torso and pelvic organs.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of spinal cord injuries often result in the injury victim suffering from some type of permanent disability or loss of mobility and sensation.

Associated Costs And Symptoms of Spine Injuries

With an estimated lifetime cost of between $500,000 to over $3 MILLION for the care and treatment of a spinal cord injury, any delay in obtaining medical treatment can cause additional damage that can be more expensive to treat at a later stage (if it is treatable at all).

Some common symptoms of a spine injury can include (but are not limited to):

  • Intense back pain or pressure in the head, back or neck
  • Trouble breathing
  • Difficulty walking
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands, fingers, feet or toes
  • Loss of bowel and/or bladder control
  • Weakness or paralysis in any area of the body

It’s also worth noting that some spinal cord injuries are not always apparent – numbness and paralysis can come on gradually as bleeding or swelling occurs near the injury.

Important Information About Spinal Cord Injury Diagnosis

Unfortunately, there is no cure for serious spinal cord injuries that involve severed nerves or other similar related damages – however, there are medications available that can control the pain.

Doctors will often test the patient’s ability to feel nerve-based sensations (for example: sliding the tip of a writing pen along the sole of the victim’s foot) or to perform movement of their extremities (moving toes or fingers). Physicians may order CT scans, X-rays or an MRI of the patient prior to giving a diagnosis.

In many instances, it may be a few days after the injury has occurred before doctors know the full extent of the injury.
